  LOCATION

  • Tembe and Kosi are situated in the remote Tongaland region of KwaZulu-Natal, an area of immense natural and cultural diversity.

  • Tembe's enormous tuskers are now rated as the largest in Southern Africa. We will be photographing wildlife, nature and the traditional dances of the Tonga people.

  • Kosi Bay is a World Heritage Site, famous for its pristine lakes and the age-old fish kraals of the Tonga people.We will travel three of the lakes by boat and visit Bhanga Neck on the Maputaland coastline. Photographic opportunities include landscape, seascape, wildlife, birds and culture. 

  • Tembe Safari Lodge is our home for five days. Accommodation is in secluded, luxury tented pavilions with en-suite bathrooms. The thatched open-plan lodge has a lounge, dining room, a well-stocked bar and a swimming pool.

  PHOTOGRAPHY

  • The field workshop offers photographers the opportunity to work in small groups under the guidance of a professional photographer and a game guide.

  • Field trips include game drives, a boat excursion and photographing from the safety of hides.

  • Both beginners and advanced photographers are welcome to attend. 

  • The workshop caters for digital photographers.

  • Presentations include Wildlife Photography and Landscape Photography.  

  • Evaluation and feedback on participants' work are given on a daily basis.

Lex Hes is one of South Africa’s foremost wildlife and nature photographers and natural history experts. He is co-owner of EcoTraining, the oldest field guide training company in Africa operating from the Makuleke Concession in the Kruger National Park. As safari guide, he takes nature lovers and photographers into the wildest corners of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and other African countries. His extensive knowledge of Africa’s ecosystems and wildlife, and his passion for photography are encapsulated in several books like the acclaimed Leopards of Londolozi and The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals. In 1998 he won the Agfa Awards Wildlife Photography Competition. He also has his own Lex Hes designer range of outdoor clothing.

Anita is a professional photographer and freelance photojournalist, specializing in travel. She has a Diploma in Photography and her portfolio focuses on natural and cultural history, travel, fine art, studio work and commercial photography. Her photo-articles on Africa’s fascinating cultures, wildlife and interesting places are published in national and local magazines and papers. She has several magazine cover pages to her credit and has recently published articles on Kosi Bay and Maputaland's Elephant Coast in SA Country Life.  In 2009 she received two Caxton Excellence Awards for Writer of the Year and Best Written Feature.She presents digital photography workshops at her studio in Mtunzini in KwaZulu-Natal, and spearheaded the College of National Photography's new campus in Durban. She also co-presents workshops with Willem Oets in Durban. In September 2010, she launches a new workshop on Photography as Creative Medium in the Overberg.

Willem has been a photographer for the past 17 years and his skill and appreciation of photography as a creative medium was guided and shaped by Canadian photographer Freeman Patterson and Kamieskroon legend Colla Swart. He developed as a landscape and abstract photographer and since embracing digital photography four years ago, has ventured into other genres. His teaching skills, enthusiasm and audio-visual presentations are well known and he presents digital photography and audio-visual workshops at his digital lab in Durban. His work is widely published, the most recent being a Portfolio in Getaway (December 2006).  
  COST, PAYMENT &  CANCELLATION POLICY

  • Single:   R 8900 (Suni pavilions: Standard)

  • Double: R 8100 (Matriarch pavilions: Luxury)

  • The cost is per person and includes accommodation, meals, game drives, boat excursion and workshop fees

  • Excluded are transport to and from Tembe and Kosi, entrance fees to the Parks, beverages other than tea and coffee

  • A deposit of 50% is payable on reservation. The balance is payable 30 days before commencement of the workshop.Internet bank payments are preferred. Payment by credit card can be arranged. For bank and payment detail please refer to the  Registration Form.

  • For cancellations received more than 30 days prior to the first day of the workshop, 50% of the deposit is refundable. For cancellations less than 30 days prior to the workshop, no refund is payable, unless the vacancy is filled, in which case 50% of the deposit will be refunded. If  the workshop is cancelled for any unforeseen reason, you will be notified and your deposit will be fully refunded. Tongaland Photography cannot accept responsibility for any other costs incurred by participants.  

 

EQUIPMENT

  • SLR Digtital Camera

  • Tripod (preferably Manfrotto #190or #055) 

  • Bean Bag

  • Lenses that will provide a range from wide angle (28 mm or less) to tele (300 mm or more) and a macro lens or a set of close-up filters

  • A sturdy camera bag

  • Dust cover to protect your equipment on the game-drive vehicles and a waterproof cover to protect your equipment on the boat (a towel and plastic bag will do)

  • Camera & lens cleaning kit

  • A laptop or notebook computer with your camera’s software and any version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements loaded.

  • A card reader for faster downloading 

  • Memory cards, batteries and battery charger

  • An electrical extension lead and multi-plug

  WHAT TO BRING

  • Day temperatures for  May vary from 16C – 30+C and night temperatures are between 8C – 20C. Early mornings can be very chilly.

  • Cotton, khaki and denim clothes are recommended and it is advisable to dress in layers.

  • Warm clothes for the early morning drives and boat trip. We leave the lodge long before sunrise and it can be very cold.

  • A hat or cap.

  • Sun block, mosquito repellent and stuff for ticks. This is medium risk malaria area. Please consult your physician about the appropriate preventative medication. 

  • A torch and extra batteries.

 

  TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS AND DIRECTIONS
  • Note that the roads in northern Maputaland have many potholes, so please drive carefully.

  • Participants must preferably organise their own transport to the Park. We will help in coordinating arrangements if necessary.

  • Tembe is only accessible to 4x4 vehicles. You will leave your vehicle inside the Park at the gate from where you will be transported to the Lodge.

Tembe Elephant Park is about 7 - 8 hours’ drive from the OR Tambo 

(Johannesburg) International Airport and 4 -5 hours from Durban Airport.

From Johannesburg take the N17 to Ermelo, then take the N2 to Pongola. About 48 km after Pongola, turn left on the Jozini / Pongola Poort road. Drive across the dam wall and continue on this road, past the turn-off to Ndumo Game Reserve and on to Tembe Elephant Park on your left.

From Durban Airport, take the N2 North for about 260 km. Take the Hluhluwe turn-off, turn right to drive over the N2 and continue to the small town of Hluhluwe. Drive through the town and at the T-junction turn left, then take the first turn to the right (Sodwana / Phinda Road). Continue on this road (R22) for about 120 km until you get to a T-junction where you turn left. Tembe is on this stretch of road on the right.
